A Guide to the Best Vancouver Vacation Attractions

Vancouver is a great place for vacations, romantic getaways, or as a base for exploring southwestern B.C. Let me tell you some more about our hometown!

One of the most unique aspects about Vancouver is its location. The wilderness is only a ½ hour drive away from downtown!

Getting close to nature is very easy here. The hiking, sailing, skiing and golfing opportunities are just awesome and available most of the year. You can travel to Whistler quite easily (1.5 hr drive from the city), and the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island is a short 30 km trip to the south.

When is the best time to plan your Vancouver vacation? Anytime between April to the end of September will give you a decent chance for some nice weather. We get the most rain and low clouds between November and February.

Here's a brief look at some of the top Vancouver attractions:

Stanley Park: One of the jewels of Vancouver. An incredible 405 hectare park right beside the city center! Trails through the forest, excellent views of the city and north shore mountains, historic totem poles, and the Vancouver Aquarium are just a few reasons why this should be one of the first stops on your Vancouver vacation.

Robson Street: The main shopping artery in the city. Shops, restaurants, and hotels line each side of the street, which gets pretty busy from June to October. If you like Starbucks and love to people watch, there are 2 of them across from each other on the corner of Robson and Thurlow streets!

Canada Place: Originally built for Expo 86, Canada Place, which includes the convention center and Pan Pacific Hotel, is a signature building on the Vancouver waterfront, vaguely familiar to the Opera House in Sydney. A walk around the perimeter shows off the North Shore Mountains, harbor and any cruise ships that are docked during the summer season. If you’re in the mood for a film of some type, the IMAX Theater at the north end has interesting films on a giant five story high screen with surround sound!

Granville Island: Just a great place to spend an afternoon or early evening wandering through the shops, checking out the Public Market, sipping an espresso and watching the buskers, or stopping by the Granville Island Brewery and sampling the latest pale ale! You can also catch the “sea taxi”, a small little craft that shuttles you around False Creek to different places like Science World and across the water to the downtown side.

Capilano Suspension Bridge: It’s a long way down! (Over 200 ft). A rope-and-plank swinging bridge over the rushing waters of the Capilano River – scary, but totally safe! Numbers of visitors wise, this is the biggest draw in the city, and the admission price has gotten a little steeper too. Try mornings or early evening for the fewest crowds.

Even though Brazil covers almost half of South America a majority of its residents live on the coast. The residents of Brazil vary in ethnic orientation as well as economic status. Because of the people and the lush landscape, Brazil is a fabulous place to visit.

One of the most popular places to visit when in Brazil is Rio de Janeiro. This city is known as the marvelous city and has one of the most beautiful settings in the world. It boasts beautiful beaches and breathtaking views.

While in Rio you can view the Christ the Redeemer statue which sits on top of Corcovado.

There are also a multitude of beaches that you can visit depending on your lifestyle. Rios main beaches include Arpoador, Barra da Tijuca, Botafogo, Flamengo, Leblon, Leme, Pepino and Vidigal.

Rio is also home to some wonderful museums, including the Museu Historico Nacional. However, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio De Janeiro houses Brazil’s most important collection of modern art. If you are interested in learning more about Brazillian history, be sure to visit the Museu da Republica.

Another great city is Sao Paulo. It is South America’s largest city with over 17 million residents and is Brazils financial, commercial and industrial heartland. As a tourist, you will not want to miss it’s famed nightlife or grand shopping opportunities.

Salvador da Bahia is the state capital and is split into upper and lower sections. This city is perfect for a long walking excursion because most of Salvador’s museum, palaces and churches are concentrated within Cidade Alta. This is also the place to find local craftsmanship finds. Head for the Mercado Modelo to find the best in Brazil, with a focus on rich African flavors. Salvador is known for being the center of Brazilian music and other great clubs and bars featuring live music of Brazil.

If you are interested in exploring underground lakes like Lago Azul and viewing spectacular waterfalls, be sure to visit the Diamantina National Park.

Travel to Northern Brazil and you can visit the Amazon River. You can also visit one of the world’s biggest and most spectacular falls located where Paraguay, Argentia and Brazil meet. If you are more interested in seeing some exotic wildlife be sure to visit the Pantanal Wetlands. The huge area extends into Bolivia and Paraguay.

A heavenly village nestled on the coast is Jericocoara. While there you can take in awesome views of a sparkling white sand-dune desert and a gorgeous turquoise sea.

Brazil ’s capital, Brasilia, and does not have a lot to offer the tourist as the cities of Rio and Sao Paulo or the Northeast section of the country. However, there is some interesting architecture to see. A guided tour is recommended if you want to venture into the capital.

If you are lucky enough to visit Brazil anywhere from December to March you can participate in Bahia’s Carnival which is a lavish festival with memorable parties, music and great Latin American food. Carnival in Rio takes place in February/March. Local residents dress in lavish, colorful costumes and it is known as one of the biggest parties in the world to celebrate Lent.

There is a great amount of different things to do and places to meet in the island of Lanzarote. Lanzarote is located towards the eastern area of the Canary Islands, and shows a size of about 13 miles in width and40 miles in length. One of the most appealing characteristics of Lanzarote is its climate. Lanzarote offers warm temperatures and scarce rains year around, turning it into a great place for those who wish to spend time at the beach and enjoy as many outdoor activities as possible.

The Limantaya National Park is one of the first spot tourists should visit while being in the island. This park was created over an area of lava field of more than 20 square miles. This lava field was created around the year 1730, when several volcanic eruptions covered the area with lava.

The House of Cesar Manrique is another interesting place tourists can visit in Lanzarote. This house is interesting from several points of view, such as from an architectonic perspective or a historic and an art related one. Near this place, within the central region of Lanzarote, there is the island's city of Arrecife, where tourists can find hotels, shops, restaurants and other facilities.

The northern area of Lanzarote has several attractive places to visit. One of these places is the Jameos del Agua, offering a formation of lava underground tunnels created after a volcanic eruption. Another spot to visit near the Jameos del Agua is the Mirador del Río. 1. Get on a river taxi and see the beauty of the Chao Praya River.

A very different view of Bangkok I’ve got to say. If you’re the adventurer, you can just jump on one at any of its terminals. Just be fast enough as the boats ( water taxis ) hardly stop. Otherwise, book a tour from one of the hotels by the river such as The Royal Orchid Sheraton, Shangri la or The Peninsula.

2. Rub elbows with the locals and tourists at the Weekend market, Chatuchak/Jatujak

It can get very hot in here but it’s an excellent place to see the wares of Thailand. You might even find a good buy along the way. Thai ( and not so Thai ) goods available from antique furniture to fake jeans.

3.See the wonders of the Grand Palace

All hail the Queen of England, but her Buckingham Palace is nothing compared to this glorious work of art in the middle of Bangkok.

4.Have a Thai massage in Wat Po and if you have the time, take the 10-day Thai Massage course

If you don’t get a Thai massage in Thailand then you haven’t been to Thailand at all. Experience this somewhat bone breaking yet de-stressing technique right from where it originated. Or if that’s a bit too much, go for the foot massage instead.

5.Have A Relaxing Spa At The Banyan

A relaxing spa retreat right in the middle of the city. You can choose from a 1 hour facial treatment or if you have time to spare, have a 7 hour Banyan package and spoil yourself mad.

6.Visit the Floating Market

It may just be another commercial avenue for tourists to spend their dollars, but if you go to the floating market early in the morning when the “river-folk” are actually buying and selling goods mindless of the tourists, then it’s a very good cultural experience.

Sure many goods are over-priced but if you know how to haggle and how much you’re willing to pay for what you’re buying, this can be very fun. If you go very early, just when the shops are opening, you might even get the prices real low ( first buyers luck!)

Shopping is the Thai’s national past time and wherever you are in Bangkok, you will never run out of shops to explore. You’ll find practically everything in this City Of Angels and at very reasonable prices to boot. For reasonable priced clothes, go to Pratunum Market; for little trinkets, go to Yaowarat in Chinatown; for bargain software, go to Panthip plaza, and for designer clothes, try Central Plaza or The Emporium Shopping Center.

9.Try Thai cuisine

You’ve had Thai food in your country and I’m sure it’s good; but Thai food cooked in Thailand, is in my opinion, just heavenly! Just be sure to know the words, Mai Pet ( My Pet ). This means not spicy in Thai, but you’ll probably be wondering how hot the spicy dishes are after you’ve bit into your first chilli!

10.See An Elephant Show

I know they should be in the wild and all that…but if I were an elephant, this humiliation of dancing in front of amused humans is much better than the alternative which is walking on the hot streets of Bangkok waiting for tourists to buy me a piece of sugar cane for food. And I have to say, this is one show I enjoy. Watch out for the baby elephants! They’re a real treat!

Six Things to do in Barcelona

The Spanish city of Barcelona (natives call is Barca, pronouned "Bah-sa") is a vibrant, large and extremely fun place to visit. It has countless attractions, from beautiful buildings to trendy restaurants, museums to tapas bars. And let's not forget the coolest feature: the Mediterranean Ocean comes right up the center of the city. If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Barcelona, be sure to be the following 6 things into your itinerary:

1. Walk. Unlike some cities, a few days in Barcelona is likely to energize you rather than leave you drained. This is because there are as just as many places to relax and unwind as there are must-see places. Like so many Mediterranean cities, it is possible to have a fantastic stay in Barca just by taking a walk - there are so many things to stop and admire.

2. Make sure to look at the gorgeous buildings designed by famous Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi. His work is colorful, fanciful and sure to lift your mood. Your first stop should be Sagrada Familia, the stunning cathedral that's been under construction since Gaudi was alive. Gaudi was a devout Catholic, and this amazing structure shows his passion for his religious beliefs. You can also take a look at the private apartments and houses the architect built all over the city. One striking example is Casa Mila, with a blue-green serpentine outer wall that curves like a watery wave. Travel up to the roof, where you'll find chimney stacks shaped like statues.

3. If you like Gaudi's buildings, be sure to stop by the Park Guell, also designed by this talented architect in the early 20th century. It will surely leave a lasting impression. The park is beloved by natives and tourists alike, who flock to see the colorful curving benches and whismical sculptures studded with mosaic tiles. Watch the youngsters playing football while their parents sit nearby enjoying a cup of coffee. If you want to get away from the crowds, pathways lead to more private areas of the park.

4. Ramble along La Rambla, the long stretch of street that runs from the water's edge to the old portion of the city. The street once carried water inland, but it's now an entertainment mecca, full of storefronts, theaters, bars and restaurants. It's also home to a covered food- hall where you can stock up on tasty treats, from cheese to ham to nuts to fruits and veggies.

5. Indulge your artistic side. Stop in at the Musee Picasso, a cozy museum devoted solely to the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. Here you'll find many fine pieces of ceramic artwork, childhood sketches, mature works and information on the artist's life. The museum is full of fascinating and beautiful images, but it's small enough to explore over the course of an afternoon.

6. Sports buffs should run on over to Camp Nou, a stadium where some of Europe's most exciting soccer matches have been held. Try and catch a game, or if you're there on an off-day explore the soccer museum or take a guided tour of the facilities. As you can see, there really is something for everyone in Barca!
